Agent's promises just don't fly
|
Traveler's Aide column: If an airline agent makes you a promise, get it
in
writing. If a representative tells you the carrier will reimburse you
for
expenses, get a copy of the policy. Ask for a business card or contact
information of the agent; at the very least jot down names, times and
dates of
your conversations.

Airlines raise base fares sharply, still fill planes
|
Last week, the USA's big airlines tacked $50 onto their unrestricted
coach
fares in most markets. The fare increases have produced a double-digit
percentage rise in the cost of the average airline ticket since fall.
Fare
prices are likely to go higher still, perhaps a lot higher.

German beer festival lives up to its Bavarian roots
|
For 12 days every spring, the inhabitants of Erlangen, a university
town near
Nuremberg, Germany, forget their daily routines and devote themselves
to the
serious business of drinking beer and lots of it. The Berg, as it is
commonly
called, has been held every year since 1755 and is Germany's
second-largest
beer-fest after Oktoberfest, its more famous Munich counterpart.

Download a tour, then tour downtown

Tourism is getting a digital redesign. Many young travelers are tired
of the
cheesy guided walks and the slow, sometimes pretentious audio tours
that have
become the staples of urban tourism. So instead, many Gen-Xers are
plugging
into podcast audio tours - entire self-guided tours that can be put on
an iPod.
